History
The history of ocean exploration has given us some theories that might now seem laughable, but might also make us wonder what theories might be shown incorrect years from now. For example, Charles Darwin wrote in 1942 that coral reefs were the final stages of volcanic islands. The next year, a scientist declared that life could not exist in the ocean below 1800 feet, or about 550 meters. Further study and observation, along with better equipment, showed these ideas to be incorrect and led to new ideas. Today, thanks to better submarines and computers, ocean exploration is reaching new depths, including an attempt to map the entire seafloor by 2030.
