History
For years, beautiful geometric designs on the seafloor off the coast of Japan both astounded and mystified scientists. They were the ocean equivalent of crop circles, and their genesis was just as mysterious. It turns out that the culprit, or creator, was a brand new species of pufferfish, the white-spotted pufferfish. It has many of the qualities of other pufferfish species, but it also creates vivid, even decorative formations on the sea floor as part of the courting process. Perhaps better designs attract better mates. The designs are circular and spectacular, and they prove once again that the natural world is full of surprises.
