Characteristics: This Stingray figure is highly detailed and scientifically accurate, from the stinger on its tail to the spiracles behind its eyes. The fins of its flattened, disc-shaped body are undulating to simulate the movement of the Stingray as it swims through the water.

Size and Color:This figure measures 7 inches to the tip of its tail, and is 4 inches wide. It’s slightly smaller than a standard pair of scissors. Its coloration is brown above with mottled markings to help it blend in with the sandy seabed, and white on its underside.

History:
The Ancient Greeks called the Stingray “Trygon”, while the Ancient Romans called it “Pastinaca”. Ancient cultures believed the ray’s venomous tail spine possessed many different mythical qualities.
The Common Stingray (Dasyatis pastinaca) is found in the northeast Atlantic Ocean, and in the Mediterranean and Black Seas, but there are over 200 species of Stingray found in the tropical and subtropical oceans of the world. 45 species of Stingray are either vulnerable or endangered, mostly due to overfishing.
