During the height of the whaling industry in the 17th and 18th century, the humpback whale was fished nearly to extinction. Thankfully, their stocks have recovered since legislation was introduced in the 1960’s. They are currently classified as least concern on the IUCN’s red list, although they are still somewhat threatened by large fishing nets and collisions with vessels in shipping lanes.
